Nowadays, everybody is trying to save money, therefore many people have considered to start their own SEO campaign to "actually" save some money but.. are they really saving money? or are they really losing more than they have?

I thinkThese points needs to be considered if you want handle your own SEO:

1) Taking care of SEO is not an easy task, not even a part time job ( well.. if you want to develop a successful SEO campaign)

2) You need to be sure you have enough SEO knowledge. Many people think doing SEO is just sit in front of the computer, start sending emails and posting on forums Dodgy.

3) At least have the basic HTML knowledge, I can't imagine people trying to do their own SEO and not being able to update a website's meta tags.

4) Make sure the website is Search Engine Friendly

5) Can you or your company take on an SEO campaign without experience a negative impact on other fields?

6) How good are you writing new content? SEO like websites with updated content, the more you update your website, the more you will be crawled. Are you a good writer? can you update your content constantly?

7) Do you have the time to manage all the SEO tools?

If you can handle these points, then you can handle SEO youself. If you have more points just leave the comment
I do my own, but primarily because I decided it was something I wanted to learn, to augment my design/build. I think that ideally, a designer, a coder and an SEO should have some knowledge of the others' fields. If one person has all those capabilities, some things will move along smoother.

Obviously, there's a lot of SEO people that couldn't write copy if their life depended on it, just like there are some designers that couldn't code their way out of a paper bag. And that's fine. I just think the guy that has a handle on all three, has an edge, both in final product and in cost savings.
Handling SEO by own is a lengthy task. I prefer it to do it by my own as i get something to learn from it. You have mentioned a good poin but SEO is not limited to the meta tag, good design or coding, good content. It is more than that. Not only good content but good content with keyword rich content helpful. There are still many more things to do..............

Yes, there is just one thing else to do in SEO definitely:

Stay glued to the computerTongue
Yup.. everybody should do their own SEO.

Dodgy Right after that they should learn to do their own open heart surgery so they can give themselves a bypass when the poor performance of their site causes a major cardiac infraction.

Idea Once they have that mastered they should become their own accountants, do their own taxes, get a legal degree and defend themselves in court, and hop behind the wheel of a F1 Racer for a spin in rush hour traffic.

Granted the mechanics of SEO are not rocket science.
But neither are the mechanics of open heart surgery.
All one needs is the knowledge to cut and suture, the right equipment, and a steady hand.

It is not just the mechanics of SEO that must be developed when search engine marketing a website.
You should really consider the Zen of SEO.
Get into the "headset" of a user being watched by a stalker imitating a search engine imitating a human.

OTOH, if you want to shortcut the process and can read,
I have a pretty thorough coverage of the process on my DCP site's article section and in my old, archived site's SEO 101 and White Paper.
